Need a cheap wreath for your door? Or do your kids want a wreath on their door and you don’t want to spend any $$?
Well, I’ve got the craft for you!
My daughter was going to cheer camp this summer and wanted a wreath in her school colors to decorate her dorm door. I did not want to spend and money on something that would possibly be lost, ruined, etc.
And you could absolutely make this for Christmas or whatever occasion, because it really doesn’t look half bad.
Enter the $1 wreath!
I’m so not kidding. I spent one whole dollar on this.
Does it look like a designer $100 wreath??? Umm, no. But my daughter thought it was awesome.
Items Needed:
- plastic rectangle tablecloth (found mine at Dollar Tree for, you guessed it $1)
- 2 wire clothes hangers
- wire cutters/pliers
- scissors
- patience
Start with your plastic tablecloth
Unfold it by about half. Then cut in strips. Cut folded ends.
You’re wanting strips around 3-4″ long (depending on your preference)
Take your hanger
As best as you can, shape it into a circle.
Cut the top off the second hanger. Shape it into a slightly smaller circle. I used the pliers to attach the two ends something like this.
I then set the smaller circle inside the larger and started attaching the two hangers.
This was where it gets a little irritating, just trying to keep the two from slipping around while you’re working.
First I tried twist ties as I started. It doesn’t work, they slide around. But this is to give you an idea of what you’re going for.
Don’t worry that your circle probably looks like something a 3 year old would draw. It’s okay. It’ll be hidden with all the fluffiness.
I finally found that just using some of the plastic strips to tie them together and stabilize them while you work is best.
Just do it this way from the beginning…Save your sanity. You’re welcome.
(Note: At one time they had these forms at the dollar store. I didn’t see them when I was there or I would have totally bought one. It would have cost me $2 for wreath, but I think I’m okay with that. 🙂 )
Now you’ll start taking the 8,456,478 strips of the tablecloth you cut apart and start tying them on.
Grab a glass of wine, we’ll be here a while.
**Or better yet, give it to a child who claims to be “bored” to work on.
Here goes…The best I can describe it is to make a U shape with the strip
Lay it under the wire, bring the two ends over and pass it through the opening.
Pull tight and slide as close to the previous knot as possible. The more of these little knotted tails you can manage to tie on, the fluffier it will be.
It starts taking shape after about 30,000. Just kidding. (maybe.)
I only used about half of the tablecloth, so I guess this is technically a $0.50 wreath.
That’s good, because you probably just drank a $15 bottle of wine to get through it. It all cost-averages out. (I could have added more strips to make it even fluffier, but I was d-o-n-e.)
I would totally hang the finished product on my door.
It really doesn’t look that bad from a distance….and after a bottle of wine.
Kidding. (maybe.)
